Gary Smith is Head of Investment Strategy and Risk at the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund Board (ATRF). Prior to joining ATRF, Gary served on the faculty of the Alberta School of Business for six years. From 2004 – 2010 he was Chief Economist at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). Earlier in his career, Gary worked as a bond trader at Casgrain & Company, where he was a shareholder. He has also acted as a fixed income portfolio manager and a consultant to a public sector pension plan.

Gary completed his undergraduate and masters-level training at the University of Saskatchewan and received a PhD in Finance from the University of Alberta in 1996. He is a CFA Charterholder.
