eorge Milling-Stanley joined State Street Global Advisors as a Vice President and Head of Gold Strategy in November 2014. Before joining SSGA, George ran the independent consultancy George Milling-Stanley on Gold, LLC. From October 2011 until June 2013, the consultancy's principal activity was to help JPMorgan Chase build its gold business with central banks and other government entities.
George retired from a 15-year career with the World Gold Council in 2011. His last position with the WGC was Managing Director of Government Affairs, where he was responsible for all programs involving central banks, governments, and regulatory authorities. Before that, as a key member of the small team that pioneered and launched SPDR Gold Shares SM, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker symbol GLD, he was instrumental in the development of the structures and processes that allow gold-backed Exchange Traded Funds to function.
Before joining the World Gold Council in 1996, George Milling-Stanley worked for six years at Lehman Brothers, the New York investment bank. In addition to developing customer business for the precious metals trading desk, he was responsible for the firm's research and analysis of the metals markets.
Previously he worked for Consolidated Gold Fields in London, which was at that time the second largest gold mining group in the world. As Chief Precious Metals Analyst, he provided gold market intelligence for the whole group. His duties included researching and writing the company's authoritative annual survey of the world gold industry.
George Milling-Stanley's early career was spent as a journalist, including 10 years with the Financial Times in London, where he wrote about the international mining industry.
George was born in England and studied modern languages at the University of Reading, England, and the University of Saarbrücken, Germany.
